Oddmund Hanssen dro til sjøs som 15-åring i 1937. I april 1940 ble han påmønstret «Gallia», deretter «Skandinavia» som lettmatros (mai 1940-des 1940), så Gallia igjen som matros (des. 1940-okt. 1942). Fra oktober 1942 var han påmønstret M/T B.P. Newton som matros.
B.P. Newton var på reise i konvoi fra Trinidad 3. juli 1943 for East London med full last bensin. 8. juli 1943 ble hun torpedert utenfor Paramaribo, Brasil. Oddmund ble en av 23 som omkom i krigsforliset.
Han hadde bestemt seg for å ta telegrafistutdannelse i England. Han omkom på sin siste tur med B.P. Newton før skolen begynte.
