Arbeidet fra høsten 1940 med militære etterretning i en gruppe som ble sprengt sommeren 1941. Dro til Sverige i september samme år og påmønstret M/T STORSTEN som sammen med endel andre norske skip dro ut fra Gøteborg den 31.mars 1942 med kurs for England. M/T STORSEN sank den 1.april 1942 vest for Kristiansand etter en eksplosjon. Haarstad kom opp i en livbåt som skulle forsøke å nå England, men båten kom aldri fram.
M/T STORSTEN var en av de såkalte «Kvarstadbåtene» som hadde ligget i arrest i Gøteborg. Den 31. mars 1942 brøt hun ut sammen med 10 andre norske skip med kurs for England.
