"Under krigen ble han utsatt, som så mange andre, for en særdeles stygg torpedering, og han lå i lang tid på hospital i England, hvor han etter hvert kom seg. Kaptein Hjalmar Opstad var i mange år Wilhelmsens flaggkaptein på Det fjerne Østen, Australia og Japan. Han var særdeles høyt ansett hos sin reder. Han var en meget vennlig, men bestemt kaptein som aldri hadde noe uhell i de mange år han seilte som kaptein. Kaptein Hjalmar Opstad var meget glad i sin hjemby, og han besøkte den regelmessig etter at han gikk i land. Han bodde som pensjonist i England".

"Because he was an exceptionally strong swimmer he saved many drowning sailors by climbing far down the nets and dragging the men to safety on his ship. On the Atlantic convoys, the British Navy did not allow the ships to stop to pick up the men in the water but used to drag nets behind the ships that the sailors could cling to."
