Reiste ut første gang som dekksgutt desember 1924 ombord i ANNAVORE tilh.Lundegaard & Stray av Farsund
Forsatte på sjøen med flere skip inntil han reiste hjem i 1928 for å ta styrmannskolen,med eksamen i juni 1929.
Sitt første skip som 2.styrmann var D/S"RYVINGEN før han måtte tiltre det militære. Skipsførereksamen tok han i juli 1939 for dermed å reise som 1.styrmann på D/S"LILLEMOR" av Th.Brøvig.,Farsund Mønstret av i Baltimore i mai 1940 men fikk samme måned førerjobben på "LAKE TRAVERSE" av Panama,som han stod ombord gjennom hele krigen.
