Han skriver selv: "Ble avmønstret M/S Tai Shan" i Gøteborg i juli (mai) måned 1941. Det lykkedes meg å komme vekk via Russland, Iran, Irak, India og Afrika, hvor jeg mønstret på M/S "Tortugas". Ved ankomst Liverpool ble jeg som alle andre innreisende nordmenn ført til Patriatrick Scool i i London. Efter 3 dager var jeg fri til å mønstre ut igjen. Gikk så på maskinistskole i London".
