John Gislefoss ble født i Konsmo i 1918 som nummer 4 i en søskenflokk på 9. Han bestemte seg tidlig for å bli sjømann, aller helst ville han bli noe i marinen, men det ble i stedet handelsflåten. Han seilte kontinuerlig i ca. 47 år, bare med et par korte avbrudd for nødvendig skolering. Fikk sin første hyre i 1936 som jungmann, han var da 17 år og nettopp ferdig med opplæringen på skoleskipet ”Sørlandet”. I 1982 gikk han i land, da hadde han seilt som kaptein de 27 siste årene".
