Antatt i marinen den mai 1941  og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Scotland.
Gjorde først tjeneste ved korvett-avdelingen i tiden 3.9.1941 til 26.9.1941 - deretter ombord på korvetten H.NOR.MS ACANTUS fra 26.9.1941 til 14.12.1941.
KNM HEIMDAL fra 23.12.1941 til 10.1.1942.
Han ble nå utlånt til handelsflåtens selvforsvar og gjorde tjeneste på:
D/S GUDRUN fra 27.1.1942 til 6.6.1942.
D/S MARIANNE fra 17.6.1942 til 1.12.1942.
M/T JAMES HAWSON fra 13.12.1942 til 1.3.1943.
M/T SPINANGER fra 7.3.1943 til 28.4.1943.
M/T SANDANGER fra 30.4.1943 til skipet ble torpedert den 12.mai 1943 i.
Av besetningen på M/T SANDANGER ble 20 mann drept, og en av disse var Arme Leonard Kanestrøm.

KANESTRØM, ARNE LEONARD, matros og kanoner, Kristiansund. Født 14. mars 1921 i Kristiansund, s. av Ingvald Kanestrøm, f. 1900 i Kristiansund, og Alette f. Ohrstrand, f. 1900 i Frei. Reiste til sjøs da han var 16 år. Seilte under krigen i alliert fart som kanoner på m/t Sandanger, og omkom da skipet ble torpedert 12. mai 1943, på vei fra New York til Belfast.
