M/S Thorstrand:
3/1943: Var på reise fra Liverpool til New York med 1.500 tonn stykkgods. Hun fulgte uavhengig kurs med 15 knops fart. 5. mars 1943 ble flere tyske ubåter oppdaget. Ved kurs endringer og skudd fra kanonen om bord klarte de i flere timer å holde ubåtene vekk. 6. mars smalt torpedoen fra tyske U-172 ( Korvettenkaitän Carl Emmermann ) inn i skutesiden i pos. N41.23' og W42.50'. Tre mann ble øyeblikkelig drept, mens en fjerde omkom da han hoppet over bord. M/S THORSTRAND sank etter 20 minutter. Opptelling viste at 35 av mannskapet var reddet sammen med åtte passasjerer. Blant dem Evald Lundberg Pettersen. Neste morgen tok motorbåten de andre båtene på slep med kurs for Azorene. Samme ettermiddag ble den ene livbåten oppgitt på grunn av lekkasje, og tre sårede ble
overført til motorbåten. Motorbåten ble tatt opp 14. mars av amerikansk skip, og folkene landsatt i Casablanca 21. mars. Den andre livbåten kom inn til Flores, Azorene, 11 dager etter torpederingen.
